Residential Roofing in Mustang OK - Wind Damage and Creased Shingles on Newer Roofs

Mustang roofs skew newer, so wind damage and creased shingles are what we find most. How to spot them, why they never re-seal, and when to call.

- By CRE Roofing, Warr Acres OK

The most common residential roofing problem we find in Mustang, Oklahoma is not an old roof wearing out. It is wind damage on a newer roof - shingles that lifted, creased and lay back down looking fine. CRE Roofing inspects Mustang homes for free and shows you photos of exactly what the wind did, slope by slope.

Mustang has added a lot of housing in a short time, so its roofs skew newer than the inner metro. That changes what a good inspection should be looking for.

Why newer Mustang roofs still get damaged

A newer roof is not a storm-proof roof. Shingles are held down by nails and by a strip of sealant that bonds each course to the one below it. Strong straight-line winds in the southwest metro can peel a shingle up past that seal, bend it back and drop it.

Once that happens, the shingle has two problems:

  • The seal is broken. It will not re-seal on its own, even after a hot summer.
  • The mat is creased. A shingle bent back far enough leaves a crease line across its width. That line is a weak point where the shingle cracks and tears in the next blow.

From the driveway, the roof looks like nothing happened. That is why creased shingles are the damage type most often missed.

How to spot wind damage from the ground

You cannot see a crease from the yard, but you can see the clues that send someone up the ladder:

  • Shingles or pieces of shingle in the yard, gutters or flower beds after a storm
  • A row of shingles that looks slightly raised or uneven along one slope
  • Exposed nail heads or bare strips where a tab used to be
  • Granules piled at the bottom of a downspout
  • New water stains on a ceiling near an outside wall

If you notice any of these after a windy night, write down the date. Storm dates matter if this turns into an insurance claim later. Do not climb onto the roof yourself to check.

What a proper Mustang roof inspection covers

When a CRE crew member inspects a roof in Mustang, we do not just look for missing shingles. We check whether the shingles are still sealed, look for crease lines on the windward slopes, check ridge caps and hip shingles, and look at the soft metals - vents, flashing and gutters - that tell an adjuster how hard the storm hit.

You get photos of every slope and a plain-language explanation of what we found. If the damage is minor, we tell you a repair will handle it. If it is wide enough to be a real claim, we tell you that too. More detail on how we handle storm work is on our hail and wind damage page.

Repair or replace on a newer roof?

On a newer roof, a handful of lifted shingles is usually a repair: replace the damaged shingles, hand-seal the ones around them and move on. Our roof repair page explains how we approach repairs, including emergency tarping after a storm.

It becomes a replacement conversation when creasing is spread across whole slopes, when the same shingles are no longer available, or when the same storm also bruised the roof with hail. If that is where your roof lands, see how a full roof replacement runs from tear-off to clean-up.

Thinking about metal or impact-resistant shingles?

Some Mustang homeowners use a wind or hail claim as the moment to upgrade. We install both Class 4 impact-resistant shingle systems and metal roofing. Before you choose, call your insurance agent and ask whether your policy offers a discount for an impact-resistant roof and what paperwork they need from the contractor. Details are on our metal and impact-resistant roofing page.

Common questions

Do you work in Mustang?

Yes. Mustang is part of our home market in the Oklahoma City metro. Our office is in Warr Acres, and you can read more on our Mustang service area page.

How fast can you inspect a roof in Mustang?

Metro inspections are usually scheduled within 48 hours. After a widespread storm the whole market backs up, so getting on the list early helps.

Will a creased shingle fix itself?

No. Once a shingle has broken its seal and creased, it stays that way. It needs to be replaced and the surrounding shingles sealed.

Can you cover my insurance deductible?

No. Oklahoma law does not allow a roofing contractor to pay or waive your deductible. You file the claim and pay your deductible; we document the damage and meet your adjuster on site.
