Home/Roofing/Storm damage

Hail and wind damage restoration.

Most denied claims in this market are not denied because the damage was not there. They are denied because nobody documented it correctly.

Functional hail damage is a fracture in the shingle mat underneath the granules. The roof can look fine from the driveway and still be finished, because once the mat is bruised the shingle sheds granules, dries out and fails years early.

An adjuster is looking for that specific evidence, plus corroboration: granule accumulation in the gutters, dents in soft metals like vent caps and gutter aprons, damage on the windward slopes matching the storm direction. We chalk and photograph a test square on each slope so both inspections are arguing about the same roof.

Wind damage is different

Wind lifts and creases shingles rather than bruising them. A creased shingle has broken its seal and will not re-seal, even though it looks like it is lying flat again. That is real damage and it is frequently missed.

About the crews that show up after hail

Every widespread hail event in central Oklahoma brings out-of-state storm-chasing crews. Some are fine. Many will offer to cover your deductible, which since November 2023 is illegal for a roofing contractor to offer in Oklahoma.

Before you sign anything with anyone, ask for their Oklahoma roofing registration number and look it up. Ours is #80007347. Here is what Oklahoma law actually says about deductibles →

Common questions

What size hail damages a roof?

There is no single threshold. Softer, older shingles bruise at smaller stone sizes, and wind-driven hail hits at an angle that does more damage than the same stone falling straight down. That is why an inspection matters more than the hail report.

What does functional hail damage look like?

A bruise: the shingle mat is fractured under the granules even though the surface looks intact. You find it by feel as much as by eye. Granule loss exposing the mat, and dents in soft metals like vents and gutters, are corroborating evidence.

What is 'cosmetic damage only'?

It is the most common denial reason in this market - the carrier's position that the hail marked the roof without shortening its life. It is sometimes true. It is also the default answer when nobody documented the damage as functional. Proper documentation on the front end is what prevents it.

How long do I have to file a hail claim in Oklahoma?

Policies vary and the clock generally starts at the date of the storm, not the date you noticed. Do not sit on it. If you think a storm hit your roof, get it inspected and documented while the evidence is fresh.
