Home/Siding & gutters

Siding and gutters.

The two things hail takes that homeowners forget to claim. Usually the same storm, usually the same claim - and cheapest to fix while the crew is already there.

When hail takes a roof it usually takes siding and gutters too, and those two get left off more claims than any other line item. The same storm, the same loss, the same deductible - but only if they are documented together at the start.

The damage is also evidence. Impact marks on siding and dents in soft metals like gutters, downspouts and vent caps are what tell an adjuster the storm was real and which direction it came from. A roof inspection that never looks at the walls is throwing away half the proof.

What we look for

  • Cracked, chipped or holed siding, especially on the windward elevations
  • Dents and dings in gutters, downspouts and gutter aprons
  • Fascia damage behind the gutter line, where water gets in first
  • Loose or pulled gutter hangers after a wind event
  • Splits in vinyl that opened up in a cold-weather storm

Why it belongs on one claim

One storm is one loss. Roof, siding and gutters filed together means one deductible and one adjuster visit.

Discovering the siding damage six months later usually means a second claim, sometimes a second deductible, and an argument about whether the damage came from the same storm you already filed on. We photograph the whole envelope on the first inspection for exactly that reason - even when you only called about the roof.

Common questions

Does hail damage siding as well as the roof?

Often, and it is frequently missed. Hail cracks, chips and dents siding, and impacts on the softer sides of the house tell an adjuster which direction the storm came from. Vinyl siding cracks in cold weather at impact energies that would only mark it in summer.

Should siding and gutters go on the same insurance claim as the roof?

If the same storm caused them, yes - it is one loss, not three. Splitting them into separate claims later is harder and sometimes means a second deductible. This is one of the most common ways money gets left on the table after an Oklahoma hail storm.

Do you replace gutters when you replace the roof?

Where they need it. Gutters and the fascia behind them take a beating in a hail event, and the roof edge is the one place where roofing, fascia and gutter all meet - which is exactly why doing them separately, months apart, tends to create the leak nobody can find.

Do you do siding and gutters on their own, without a roof?

Yes.
