Roofing Companies in Norman OK - 6 Checks Before You Sign

Comparing roofing companies in Norman OK? Six checks before you sign - registration, deductible offers, a written scope, decking, warranty and crews.

- By CRE Roofing, Warr Acres OK

The fastest way to sort roofing companies in Norman OK is to check six things before you sign anything: the Oklahoma registration number, how they talk about your deductible, what is written into the scope, how they handle decking, who honors the warranty, and who will actually be on your roof.

CRE Roofing is a family-owned contractor based in Warr Acres, and Norman is part of our home service area in the south metro. Here is the checklist we would want our own families to use - including on us.

1. Look up the registration number

Oklahoma's Roofing Contractor Registration Act requires roofing contractors to register with the Construction Industries Board and carry general liability coverage. The CIB has a public roofing registration search.

Ask for the number, then look it up. If the company is not listed, or the name on the registration is not the name on your contract, stop there.

2. Listen to what they say about your deductible

Since November 1, 2023, Oklahoma law (Okla. Stat. tit. 59, sec. 1151.30) has prohibited a roofing contractor from paying, waiving, absorbing or rebating your insurance deductible.

Anyone who offers to "take care of" it is telling you how they plan to write your claim. The deductible does not disappear - it gets buried in a larger scope sent to your carrier under your name. A legitimate contractor documents the damage, meets the adjuster, supplements honestly and charges you your deductible.

3. Get the scope in writing, line by line

A cheaper bid is usually a shorter list of new parts. Ask each company to put in writing whether these are new or re-used:

  • Underlayment
  • Pipe boots
  • Vents
  • Drip edge and flashing at walls, valleys and penetrations
  • Ridge and intake ventilation

Also confirm who pulls the permit and whether cleanup includes a magnet sweep of the yard and driveway. Our roof replacement page lists every line item we include so you have something to compare against.

4. Ask how they handle decking - especially near campus

Norman's older homes near the university often have original decking and layered roofs. Extra layers mean more tear-off weight and disposal, and soft or uneven boards may need replacing before new underlayment goes down. Newer homes east and north of town are usually a single layer on modern decking.

That is why two roofs with the same square count can price differently. Ask each company how they will document the decking once the old roof is off. On a CRE job, if boards need replacing, we photograph them and show you before we do it, not on the invoice afterward.

5. Ask who honors the warranty in five years

There are two warranties on a roof. The manufacturer covers the shingles. The contractor covers the installation - and most roof failures are installation failures.

A workmanship warranty is only as good as the company behind it. CRE Roofing's roofing work carries a limited lifetime workmanship warranty for as long as the original owner owns and occupies the home, and we publish the exclusions on our warranty page. We have been a BBB Accredited Business since 2023, with an office in Warr Acres.

6. Ask who will be on your roof

Many roofing companies subcontract their shingle crews. That is normal for companies our size, and ours are subcontracted too - we say so up front. What matters is that the company whose name is on your contract is accountable for the work, answers the warranty call, and is reachable after the storm season ends.

A note on Norman storm dates

Norman is home to the National Weather Center, and many homeowners here know exactly which storm crossed their address and when. Bring that date to the inspection. It helps line up your documentation with the event your carrier is adjusting. We photograph functional hail and wind damage so the adjuster meeting starts from evidence, not guesses. See how that works on our storm damage page.

Common questions

How do I check if a Norman roofer is registered? Ask for the Oklahoma roofing registration number and look it up in the Construction Industries Board's public search.

Is the cheapest bid ever the right one? Sometimes, but compare line items first. A missing underlayment, boot or flashing line usually explains the gap.

Do you repair Norman roofs, or only replace them? Both. Localized leaks and failed parts get repaired when the rest of the roof has life left.

Is your inspection free? Yes - free, with photos, and no obligation.
