The 30 percent federal credit for a system you own is gone. Section 25D ended for expenditures made after December 31, 2025. It was ended by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, P.L. 119-21, signed July 4, 2025.
The trap: it goes by the finish date
The IRS counts the money as spent when the install is finished. Not when you signed. Not when you paid a deposit.
So a homeowner who put money down in 2025 and had the crew show up in 2026 does not get the credit. If you are in that spot, ask your tax preparer before you assume either way.
What is left
One thing survives, and it works differently.
Section 48E still runs through 2027. It covers third-party owned systems. That means a lease or a power purchase deal. The company that owns the panels claims the credit, not you. You see it as a lower monthly rate, not a line on your tax return.
We offer both. You can buy a system outright, or go third-party owned. The right answer depends on whether you want the asset or the lower payment.
Order of operations still matters
If your roof has under about 10 years left, replace it before the panels go on.
Taking an array off and putting it back is real money for zero new power. Doing it in the right order is the cheapest decision in this whole process.
Every mount is a hole in your roof. The most common solar complaint we hear is a leak at a bad mount. That is why the crew setting the array should be a roofing crew. Ours is. More on that: how we do solar.
Batteries
We install Enphase and FranklinWH. A battery is a separate call from the panels. It answers one question. What happens when the power goes out. See battery storage.
This describes federal tax law as we understand it as a contractor. It is not tax advice. Talk to your tax preparer about your own return.
Common questions
Is there still a federal solar tax credit in 2026?
Not for a system you own. Section 25D was the 30 percent home credit. It ended for money spent after December 31, 2025. Section 48E still covers third-party owned systems through 2027. The owner of the system claims it, not you.
I paid a deposit in 2025. Do I still get the credit?
Probably not. The IRS counts the money as spent when the install is finished. Not when you paid. A system finished in 2026 does not qualify on a 2025 deposit. Ask your tax preparer about your case.
Do I need a new roof before solar?
If your roof has under about 10 years left, replace it first. Taking an array off and putting it back later is money spent for nothing.
Will solar panels damage my roof?
Every mount is a hole in your roof. The most common solar complaint we see is a leak at a bad mount. That is why the crew setting the array should be a roofing crew.
