Hail Damage Roofers in Oklahoma City - Warning Signs of a Storm Chaser at Your Door

After hail, roofers knock on every door in OKC. The warning signs of a storm chaser, what to say at the door, and how to pick a hail damage roofer who stays.

- By CRE Roofing, Warr Acres OK

The best hail damage roofer for your Oklahoma City home is one with a local office, a written scope, no pressure to sign on the spot, and no offer to touch your deductible. The warning signs of a storm chaser are usually visible in the first five minutes at your door. CRE Roofing has worked Oklahoma storms from our Warr Acres office since 2018, and these are the signs we hear about most from homeowners who called us for a second look.

Why storm chasers show up after hail

Every widespread hail event in central Oklahoma brings a wave of out-of-state crews. Some do fine work. Many are gone by the time the next season starts, along with the phone number on their truck and anyone you could call about a leak.

A roof repair or replacement is only as good as the company that will answer when something goes wrong a year later. That is the whole reason to slow down.

Warning signs at the door

None of these alone proves a crew is a storm chaser, but two or three together should make you pause.

  1. Magnetic door signs and a rented or out-of-state truck. A local roofer usually has a permanent name on the vehicle and an address you can drive to.
  2. "We were just working on your neighbor's roof." Sometimes true. Ask for the address, then check whether that neighbor actually hired them.
  3. Pressure to sign today. Lines like "this price is only good while we are in the area" or "the insurance deadline is this week" are pressure, not information.
  4. An offer to pay, waive or cover your deductible. Since November 1, 2023, Oklahoma law prohibits a roofing contractor from paying, waiving, absorbing or rebating your deductible. Any crew that offers is telling you how they operate. Read more in our post on whether a roofer can pay your deductible in Oklahoma.
  5. A contract handed over before anyone inspects the roof. A signature should come after you know what is damaged, not before.
  6. No written scope. If they cannot tell you in writing what will be replaced - decking, underlayment, flashing, vents, pipe boots - you cannot compare bids.
  7. A cash-only or large upfront payment request. Be cautious about paying a large share before work starts.

What to say when someone knocks

You do not have to argue. Take their card, say you are getting your own inspection, and close the door. Then:

  • Write down the storm date. It matters if you file a claim later.
  • Photograph any interior water stains before cleaning anything up.
  • Call your insurance company yourself if you think there is damage.
  • Book an inspection with a roofer you chose, not one who chose you.

Do not climb on the roof to look for yourself. Hail damage is hard to see from the ground, and it is not worth a fall.

What a good hail damage roofer actually does

The difference between a good inspection and a quick one decides a lot of Oklahoma hail claims. Functional hail damage is a bruise in the shingle mat under the granules, and the roof can look fine from the driveway while being finished.

On a CRE Roofing inspection, we chalk and photograph a test square on each slope and check the soft metals - vent caps, gutters, gutter aprons - that tell an adjuster how hard the storm hit. Then we tell you honestly whether there is a claim worth filing. If there is not, we say so, and you keep your claims history clean. More on that difference is in our post on functional vs cosmetic hail damage.

If you file, we meet your adjuster on the roof with our documentation so both inspections are looking at the same roof on the same day. Our storm damage page walks through the process.

Questions worth asking any roofer

  • Where is your office, and how long have you worked in the metro?
  • Who will actually be on my roof?
  • What is in the written scope, line by line?
  • Who honors the workmanship warranty, and how do I reach you in two years?
  • Will you be at the adjuster inspection?

CRE Roofing is family owned, based in Warr Acres, and backs its work with a limited lifetime workmanship warranty - a promise that only means something because we will still be here.

Common questions

Are all out-of-state roofers bad?

No. The issue is whether they will be reachable after they leave. Ask where the office is and who handles warranty calls.

How soon after hail should I get an inspection?

Soon. Policies vary, and the clock generally starts on the date of the storm, not the date you noticed.

Can a roofer file my claim for me?

You file and own the claim. A good roofer documents the damage and meets the adjuster.

Is a CRE inspection free?

Yes, with no obligation.
